When you visit the midwife and doctor

Why it's a good idea for you as a father to come to midwife and doctor’s appointments

Even though it’s your partner and not you who is pregnant, her pregnancy is still important for you as a father. During pregnancy, you build a relationship with your baby and prepare for your role as a father. That’s why it’s a good idea to go to the midwife and doctor. Here you will receive a lot of information about your baby, pregnancy and birth.

4 good reasons to come along to the midwife and doctor

1) Get answers to your questions
Both the midwife and the doctor are there for you too. Take the chance to get answers to your questions. No one expects you to know everything that’s going to happen when you become a father. There are no inappropriate questions, whether you’ve been a father before or not. The most important thing is that you get answers to the things you’re unsure about so that your partner and you are as comfortable as possible about the pregnancy.

2) Take part in the big and small decisions
When you come to appointments with the midwife and doctor, you can help make big and small decisions that you as a father want to be a part of. For example, talk about where your baby will be born, how he/she will be born, and whether you need extra help during the pregnancy or after the birth.

3) Talk about what’s difficult
If new negative thoughts come to you during the pregnancy, you can also talk to your doctor about what you find difficult. This may be perfectly normal, but it may also be something that needs to be taken care of.

4) Support your partner
Your support is a great advantage for your partner during her pregnancy. Among other things, you can support her by coming and listening to the information given by the midwife and the doctor. It is always easier to remember information when there are two of you, and it will also be easier to talk about it afterwards.

What happens at midwife and doctor’s appointments?

During your partner’s pregnancy, the two of you will be invited to a series of visits with your midwife and doctor. The midwife will monitor how the pregnancy is progressing and talk to you about what will happen next. The midwife will also ask how you and your partner are doing.

The doctor will give you information about the baby and the pregnancy, and your partner will be weighed and measured.

At all visits, you as a father are very welcome.
